This summer Pixar has finally released the long awaited sequel to the 14 year old “ The Incredibles “ simply titled, “ The Incredibles 2”. As usual, Pixar brought its magic of flawless animation and laughs for all ages .
The film uses reto-pixar animation while pairing it with modern references and fictional cities. It creates the perfect aesthetic to bridge the gap between generations. Those waiting to see the Incredibles back in action and young ones new to the world, all can appreciate this incredible family. After the long break, the pressure was on for the perfect sequel. This was as close as they were realistically going to get.
Elastigirl, Helen Parr, is picked by a wealthy tech tycoon to represent a movement to make super heroes legal again. This leads to a full time and lucrative job leaving Bob Parr, Aka. Mr. Incredible, to take over the child rearing duties. He does the bumbling dad stereotype to start off with but then resolves to be Mr. Incredible in all things! He makes an honest attempt at being a dad and takes it seriously.
Jack –Jack, the baby, has developed multiple new powers. This overwhelms Bob and he ends up having to ask for help. But to give him credit anyone with a baby who can disappear into the 4th dimension would need a lot of help.
Pixar took this as a moment to say something! Feminist tones were extremely evident in the film. It really brings out the changing roles in families today, while making everyone a superhero. With Bob Parr we also get to see the real side of an everyday family.
While I enjoyed the film, something about it lacked the wit that came with the original. The characters weren’t as flawed and endearing. There wasn’t as many unexpected laughs as the first. It might also be the difference of getting to know these characters at an older age or the fact that we expect so much from Pixar today. It’s really hard to say.
This film has an age old story of a family coming together to face adversity. In this case its bringing together different powers and personality traits to defeat a super villain. The Incredibles 2 is a feel good story we all love and know. Predictable warm fuzzies make this a good standard to see with the family this summer.
