Fandom Friday: Killjoys

Killjoys.

The show where “The Warrant is All.” Or is it?

I love this show because it is fun and original, but still allows subtle nods to our favorite sci-fi shows.

Killjoys follows a group of bounty hunters as they travel the ‘verse. It has a very "Firefly" feel in the adventure with humor vibe. In the lead is the kick ass female Dutch (Hannah John-Kamen). She is smart, sexy, sassy, and has some great one liners. She is accompanied by John Jaqobis (Aaron Ashmore).

He is the resident tech and science nerd. But he is also a kind person and everyone’s friend. Their ship, Lucy, has her own personality (ala Farscape), and is obvious in her favor of John over Dutch.

In the first season we pick up D’avin Jaqobis (Luke Macfarlane), John’s brother. He completes our trio of Killjoys. Joy is the currency that is used in the Quad (their bit of space). And when you get arrested, well, it is a bit of a kill joy.

The first season is filled with getting to know the characters, like a backroom doctor (Pawter played by Sarah Power) and the wise and loyal bartender (Pree played by Thom Allison).  It also lays the foundation for the politics, religion (Scarbacks led by Alvis Akari played by the yummy Morgan Kelly), and a conspiracy that interlace through this series. It is fun and humorous, but has a lot of touching emotional moments.

Season two takes us further down the rabbit hole of the conspiracy and how it ties in with the local religion. It also gets into the power play of the politics of The Quad. The one line zingers bring season two to a whole new level.

The show is comfortable with itself, and it shows. We learn more about how the politics of the upper class affect the people of the lower class, and even have a love story weaved throughout.

Season two ends with a bit of a shocker that makes you want to go right on to the next episode.

Now we are in season three, and being a killjoy has never been more fun. I am pumped to see where this season takes us. If you want to watch with me, I will be live tweeting every Friday night at 8pm EDT during new episodes. Hope to meet you there. You can currently binge watch past seasons on syfy.com. Update: Syfy has confirmed that there will be a season 4 and 5.
