Batman: The Animated Series Review
When it comes to superheroes, Batman is probably one of the most iconic heroes of all time. This brooding man of mystery has been around for centuries, flying off the page and onto the big screen. However, there was a time before Christopher Nolan and even Tim Burton. In 1992, Batman: The Animated Series hit TV screens and changed animated programs as we know it. If you haven't watched it with your kids, you should.
The animated series is important for a lot of reasons. While the show is intended for children, it tackles dark subject matters without dumbing it down. It has focused on death, loss, and even addiction. The stories that were told might be considered grown up, but the creators of the show knew how to talk about these themes without talking down to children.
The show also showed us an important side of Batman that is often neglected: his compassion. Yes, the Dark Knight is compassionate.
We see Batman showing heart when dealing with young Dick Grayson who loses his parents at a young age; but we also see Batman show compassion towards the villains he fights. In Harley’s Holiday, the newly reformed Harley Quinn ends up having a bad day and goes back to a life of crime. At the end of the episode, Batman talks to her with kindness and even buys her a pink dress she had been eyeing. He knows that these evil doers are still people and they have a chance at a good life. He still sees some good in them.
While Batman is the star of the show, this series is also memorable for the villains Batman faces. This was also the first time we heard Mark Hamill of Star Wars fame as the Joker. To this day, he still voices the character, delighting all Batman fans. The Joker is not the only villain to trouble Batman. The sultry Poison Ivy, the classy Penguin and the chilling Mr. Frost also make appearances. This show is also known for introducing Harley Quinn, a character created to be the Joker’s girlfriend.
There is nothing more to say. Batman: The Animated Series is fantastic and if you haven’t even seen one episode, you’re missing out.
She started off as a side character and throughout the years has become a staple of comic books. Created by one of the show’s writers Paul Dini, Harley Quinn started out as a victim of abuse who has since overcome it and is now the star of her own comic book series. The reason Harley is important is not just because she got her own series but because she shows comic fans that anyone can overcome their past abuse and come out on top.
