Godless Review
Netflix's newest mini series is a western style hit! Godless dropped on November 22, 2017 and stars Michelle Dockery, Jack O'Connell and Scoot McNairy in the lead roles. This gritty hard hitting mini series starts off with a stomach dropping lurch of an opening episode and takes off on a short, but thrilling ride.
It’s hard to imagine the vast emptiness of the American West if you’ve never seen it in person, but director and producer Scott Frank manages to scale every shot so that the impact of the vast deserts is felt in every episode. It certainly helps that Godless was filmed in New Mexico where the story takes place.
The star studded cast brings new life into an old genre with archetypal characters and makes us believe they are unique and real people instead of tropes we’ve all come to know. I will say the plot can drag at some points, but the vested interest in the characters keeps you around during the lulls.
Even though Godless has been accused of being too gory and too gritty, my personal opinion is that it might be a good thing to have those things associated in a show with mostly female cast members who are often accused of bringing to many soft edges in dramatic roles. Godless is a bingeable little nugget of gold in the Netflix original series gold mine.
