Spider-man Homecoming Review
The Avengers have welcomed Spider-Man into the fold in the most entertaining Spider-Man movie to date. This movie captures the innocent fun that should come with discovering the origin of a new super hero. In fact, if you take anything away from this review it should be that watching Spider-Man Homecoming is fun! If you are looking for a couple hours of air conditioning, some laughs, action, and a smidgen of romance; this movie will check off all those boxes.
Tom Holland is the Spider-Man that I have always pictured in my head. He is geeky and awkward, but pulls through when it counts. He is kind and yet still can be a little bit of an annoying teenager. His awkwardness is highlighted in his relationships with the other characters (including the sprinkling of cameos that never cease to bring this movie-goer joy). I love the "Easter eggs" of when an unexpected character, or even a character reference shows up.
Marisa Tomei is brilliant. I am so happy that they decided to go with a hip and funny version of Aunt May. Peter Parker’s classmates were also a joy. I particularly enjoyed Michelle (played by Zendaya) who behaved in the same way that I would expect Grumpy Cat to if she was somehow transformed into a high school girl.
I was also glad to see that Peter had at least one solid friend in Ned (Jacob Batalon). He is delightful and help keeps the young super hero grounded. Ah, Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). I am still mad at him from Captain America:Civil War. I wish I could put the past aside and adore this whole paternal thing he has going with Peter. But he left a good chunk of the Avengers imprisoned, and I am just not over it.
Curse you IRONMAN! Happy (Jon Favreau) provided just the buffer I needed to overlook my Stark problems and root for the suit. I adore Michael Keaton. Despite him playing a convincing bad guy, he will always be Batman to me.
I saw it in 3-D and I thought they did a good job with it. I don’t know if it is absolutely necessary, but it was a nice treat. I would recommend that you see this one in the theater. It is what summer blockbusters should be; full of action, comedy and a little snark.
