AwesomeCon Review

I attended Awesomecon, a three day celebration, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington DC June 16th through June 18th, 2017. Awesomecon is the premier SciFi/Fantasy and Science con for the DC Metro area. It's kind of like the Comic-Con of DC.

This was my first year attending Awesomecon, but I could tell that this was the year that the con directors had gone all out to secure a wide range of popular talent. Stan Lee, THE most popular comic book writer, editor, publisher and Marvel Cinematic Universe cameo, was the Guest of Honor. There were celebrity guests like David Tennant, John Barrowman, Catherine Tate, Felicia Day and more. There were champions from WWE, Shinsuke Nakamura and Charlotte Flair. Popular across geekdom, the director of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Edgar Wright was there. Popular writers Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo were there too.

There were also many other well-known comic artists and cosplay artists. The Walter E. Washington Convention Center is a whopping 2,300,000-square-foot facility with plenty of room to spread out. As I made my way through the many con events that were held all over the convention space, there was a lively buzz amongst the long time con-goers of how this year was different because of the big celebrity offerings that were being provided.

There was so much more to Awesomecon than I can summarize here. The cosplay efforts of all the attendees was amazing. I loved seeing the many variations of Wonder Woman cosplay on women and girls of all ages, body shapes and ethnicities.

One of the very special guests, for me, was Retired NASA Colonel Chris Hadfield. He hosted the Star Talk podcast live and even included Dr. Stephen Hawking via satellite as a special treat for the audience.

John Barrowman was his usual boisterously entertaining self and I really wish he would do a tour of a one-man show. He came on stage wearing the iconic Captain Jack Harkness trench coat with a TARDIS onesie underneath and white leather pumps, told a really naughty story about his husband Scott and then brought Scott out on stage! There was a little kid in a gas mask during John's Q&A that asked him "Are you my mummy?" and John and everyone in the audience burst into uncontrollable fits of laughter. It was a blast!

The line to see David Tennant was killer. I skipped breakfast to get in line "early," and by the time seating began, I thought I wouldn't make it. But waiting to see David was more than worth it. One of the scientists hosted David Tennant's panel and made the comment that he doesn't think we'll ever see time travel and David called him a "killjoy."

Felicia Day hosted the panel for Edgar Wright's new movie, "Baby Driver." He screened the first 5 minutes of the movie and it looks BRILLIANT. I haven't had a chance to see it yet, but I'm so looking forward to it! This con really lived up to its name for me, I had an awesome time!

AWESOMECON IS AWESOME!
