Anne with an “E” Review
Now streaming on Netflix, this revitalization of L.M Montgomery's tale Anne of Green Gable should be considered a shining gem amongst the sea of Netflix original shows. Starring the vivacious and captivating Amybeth McNulty as Anne Shirley-Cuthbert. This 9-episode adaptation of the original story revitalizes it for a new generation.
Set in the early 1900’s , the elderly brother and sister pair of Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert realize they cannot keep up with the running of their farm, Green Gables. They decide to adopt a boy from an orphanage to help with chores and up keep, and he would eventually inherit the farm. Due to errors in communication, a 13-year-old girl with a wild imagination and unbreakable spirit awaits them at the train station. Right away Matthew Cuthbert is unable to turn her away. The story follows them as they form an unlikely family despite Marilla’s hesitance and a town buzzing with gossip.
The story includes heart breaking scenes from Anne’s early life in the orphanage and previous home, and cutting language from strangers about her background and appearance, while maintaining a true “PG” rating. This provides an opportunity to discuss how the world used to be with our preteens and young teens, (especially here in the South, where tradition, good and bad, lives strong).
