Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 Review

Y’all. This review is spoiler free but I’m not going to be coy about my enthusiasm. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is hilarious and arguably better than the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. That’s right, I said it.

Here’s the trailer:

The Mom’s Eye View

I have three boys ages (almost) 9, 13 and 15. Am I taking them to see this movie? Yes. Should I? That’s a little more subjective. It’s totally fine for the teens. The nine year old is a harder call. If this were a random movie that did not have the force and history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe behind it, I would probably make him wait.

Why? Captain America would not approve. Right out of the gate there are words like “douchebag” and “dick” tossed around. There is a lot of off-color language in this film. No F-bombs; the writers are actually more creative than that. However, there are plenty of words that my sweet baby hasn’t been introduced to yet (at least, I don’t think he has) and I don’t want him to start using these phrases.

Language, however, is all that concerns me. There is ZERO nudity (okay, Chris Pratt has his shirt off for a hot minute) (A very hot, very short minute) and only the barest hint of a sexual situation. The movie is rated PG-13.

Mom Makes A Tough Call on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

So, why am I taking my youngest man? Because we are Marvel freaks all the way. He has seen every single Marvel film to date and he would be hell to live with if I told him he couldn’t see this one until he was older. Given that, I’m going to be a pushover and take him. This particular child is not a parrot and Lord knows he’s been exposed to plenty of things that come out of his momma’s mouth that he knows better than to repeat. I’m going to trust that he’s mature enough to handle this but also innocent enough that he will pretty much forget about particular words within five minutes of the movie being over.

What’s In It For The Adults?

Humor, and plenty of it. This movie is hilarious and only Chris Pratt could pull off these lines. You’ll be surprised, though, at how much you’ll catch yourself laughing at Dave Bautista’s Drax. Drax has a much bigger role in this film and that’s all for good.

The other standout character to me? Baby Groot. This little stick will grab your heart within minutes of the film opening. If not, well, you might want to check your vitals.

Awesome Mix Tape Vol. 2

The Soundtrack for the original Guardians of the Galaxy film was kick ass and you know it. This one is a different mix. They’ve got some of the bigger singles of the era like George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord” and Fleetwood Mac’s “Chain”. In contrast, they dug a little bit deeper with some more obscure songs that only old ladies like me will recognize. I admit I knew all the words to “Come A Little Bit Closer” by Jay and the Americans because my mom always had the “oldies” station on in the car when I was growing up.

I enjoyed the soundtrack but I have to cop to the fact that there were some songs I didn’t recognize, and I’m a 70’s baby. I think the soundtrack for this installment of Guardians of the Galaxy will be open to a little more debate.

The Final Verdict

I’m in love. I will see it again with my family and I will most likely buy the DVD as soon as it comes out. I have not laughed this much in a movie in a long time and I’m totally jealous that these actors got paid for having what looks like an incredible time. If you are a Marvel fan, this is a don’t miss. If you’re not… well, you just might be after you see this.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opens in theaters nationally on Friday, May 5th.
